Maimuna Adam (b. Maputo, 1984) makes art about travelling, delving into the emotions shared with her from personal memories and experiences, historical research and through intuitive meditations.
Through mixed-media paintings in coffee and charcoal on paper, book sculptures and video artworks, the artist follows visual narratives that she attempts to connect with the complex emotions that travel and migration can bring about to the individual in the present.
Growing up in Mozambique, Sweden and Swaziland, personal experience informs the artist’s interpretation of different themes, at times incorporating symbols of historical ‘nostalgia’ and objects from childhood memories of her own and shared with her. The transformative view that memories can live beyond the specific object or event we attach to them is suggested as play – a suitcase, a dress, and found books and objects create a space where memory is alive and we can recall, ‘re-member’ and create memories as we want to remember them from the present.
Some artworks are currently on sale through Arte de Gema Gallery (Maputo), on Artsy .
