Maimuna Adam (b. Maputo, 1984) makes artworks about travelling – she comes from a family whose members have lived in Mozambique, Norway, Chile, Sweden and India. Through mixed-media paintings in coffee and charcoal on paper, book sculptures and video artworks, Maimuna ‘tells stories’ visually about events she has read and heard of – trying to connect these with the complex emotions that travel and migration can bring about.
Growing up in Mozambique, Sweden and Swaziland, personal experience informs the artist’s interpretation of different themes, at times incorporating symbols of historical nostalgia and objects from childhood memories. The view that memories can live beyond the specific object or event we attach to them is suggested as play – a suitcase, a dress, and found books and objects create a space where memory is alive and we can recall, ‘re-member’ and create memories as we dish.
Maimuna loves to paint bespoke images created for specific campaigns and individual collectors. Contact the artist directly at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss custom artworks, original illustrations for your blog or print publication, and image licensing options.
